چکیده

We propose a novel semantic analysis of the mass/count distinction, within a new framework combining the theory of mereology with Probabilistic Type Theory with Records, Prob-TTR (Cooper et al. 2014)). While the notions akin to VAGUENESS (Chierchia 2010) and OVERLAP (Landman 2011) are needed to ground this distinction, neither on its own is sufficient to accommodate the whole range of data, especially the puzzling intraand crosslinguistic variation in count vs. mass encoding. This variation becomes tractable, if we generally treat the grammatical differences between mass and count nouns as following from the interaction of two notions: namely, VAGUENESS sharpened in terms of graded (probabilistic) type judgements, and DISJOINTNESS relative to a probability threshold. As a result, in the form-denotation mappings, this leads us to a novel semantic classification of nouns into four classes. The mass/count distinction is a bipartite grammatical distinction manifested in the standard diagnostics like a direct combination with numerals, the indefinite article and quantifiers like every, much, among others.

The Role of Vagueness in the Numerical Translation of Verbal Probabilities: A Fuzzy Approach

The paper describes a general two-step procedure for the numerical translation of linguistic terms using parametric fuzzy potential membership functions. In an empirical study 121 participants estimated numerical values that correspond to 13 verbal probability expressions. Among the estimates are the most typical numerical equivalent and the minimal and maximal values that just correspond to th...

Concordance indices for comparing fuzzy, possibilistic, rough and grey partitions

Many indices have been proposed in literature for the comparison of two crisp data partitions, as resulting from two different classifications attempts, two different clustering solutions or the comparison of a predicted vs. a true labelling. Crisp partitions however cannot model ambiguity, vagueness or uncertainty in class definition and thus are not suitable to model all cases where informati...

Narrative Vagueness in Grass’s The Tin Drum: A Text-Centric Model of Narration to Reveal Dialogized Heteroglossia

The present study sets out to investigate the narrator’s textual position in Grass’s The Tin Drum. Although authorial self-dramatization through affinities with one or more characters in the work is undeniable, this study mainly concentrates on the inner interpenetrations of heteroglot utterances as uttered by an unreliable first-person narrator, Oskar Matzerath, in the light of the Bakhtinian ...

An Interpretive Theory of Vagueness

I outline an interpretive theory of vagueness, emphasizing its advantages as a theory of language in use, compatibility with the data of descriptive linguistics, and its explanation for the interest-relativity of vagueness. Central to the theory is the notion that a 'language' in the usual sense is not a well-defined object but a cluster of more or less similar sound-meaning mappings which spea...
